The Nissan Figaro was built by a special projects group called the 'Pike Factory'. The Pike Factory also produced other 'niche' automobiles at this time such as the Be-1, Pao and S-Cargo.

The Nissan Figaro can be used as an everyday car or just simply parked up to use as a second car on weekends or when the sun is shining. Based on the Nissan Micra the Figaro has a 1.0 litre turbo charged engine and is capable of reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph with 0 – 60 in approx 12 seconds. The launch of this wonderfully individual “one off” was at the Tokyo motor show in 1989. It then went into production in 1991 when it was announced by Nissan it would only be making 20,000 units.
The demand was completely overwhelming; it seemed half of Japan wanted to own one of these cars. The only fair solution to this was to run a lottery, if you were fortunate enough to have one of the winning tickets you could then purchase one. Truly amazing, this could only happen with this car! The magpies of the Nissan Figaro design team took all the best and shiniest bits from a variety of European cars and fused them into an almost-cartoon whole. There's something there to remind you of just about every classic car you have ever seen.

Nissan announced that they were to produce 20,000 Figaros (to be released in three batches, between February and September 1991), but demand was so great that potential users had to enter a lottery in order to win the chance to buy the new car, which was priced at 1,870,000 yen (£10,000).

It's a 1950s-style, bosom-shaped Noddy car... Everywhere you go turns into a party. People want to talk about the car… It's not flashy, it doesn't guzzle petrol, it doesn't get up anybody's nose... It's a car that makes you smile. It's a witty car, and I don't think they make witty cars anymore. Everyone should have one.
